The sewing chatelaine was very popular during the reign of Queen Victoria from about 1850 and disappeared round about 1904 when fashion changed and skirts were no longer full and long. The dictionary states the word “ chatelaine “ in the context of ‘ lady of the castle ‘ dates back to 1196. As a name for a waist hung ornament , the earliest date given is 1845. « Une châtelaine » Qu’est-ce que c’est ? Une chaîne châtelaine est un accessoire que les dames portent à leur ceinture, où sont suspendus des instruments de couture, des clefs, des lunettes, un sac à main ou un porte-monnaie. La châtelaine de couture fut très appréciée sous le règne de la Reine Victoria à partir de 1850 environ et disparut vers1904, lorsque la mode changea et que les jupes ne se portèrent plus aussi longues ni aussi volumineuses. Le dictionnaire définit le mot « châtelaine » comme « la dame du château » et date son utilisation dans ce contexte à partir de 1196.
